Learning In Action: How One Club Put Governance into Practice

When people hear the word “governance”, it’s rarely met with excitement.
Policies, constitutions and legal responsibilities aren’t what most volunteers signed up for when they joined their club. But as Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club’s Club Captain, Cassie Wilmot, discovered, understanding governance is one of the most important investments a committee can make.
Cassie attended the Bendigo Bank Clubs SA Club Development Program’s “Club Governance 101” session after recognising it was an area she wanted to strengthen.
“I had been recommended by the organisation that Clubs SA provide a reliable and in-touch training course around governance. I knew this was an area I needed to be stronger in, so I jumped on board to learn more so I can best lead my club.”
One message, in particular, stayed with her.
“Governance isn’t fun, it isn’t pretty, but it sure is needed. Ignorance is not an answer; it is a requirement to know your legal requirements.”
For Cassie, the session wasn’t just about understanding legislation or ticking compliance boxes. It reinforced the responsibility committee members have to their clubs, their members and each other.
More importantly, the learning translated into action.
Since attending the session, Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club has reviewed its memberships, legal requirements and reporting processes, improved transparency around its policies and procedures, and has begun updating its constitution to reflect what the committee learned.
That’s exactly what the Club Development Program is designed to achieve.
Our goal isn’t simply to deliver training. It’s to equip South Australian clubs with practical knowledge they can take back to their committees and put into practice immediately.
When asked who she would recommend the session to, Cassie’s response was clear.
“All board members. You legally must know the answers, so find it out through an easy course.”
And if she had to sum up Governance Foundations in just one sentence?
“A must do if you want to stay safe in governance and policy.”
