Submitting Funding and Grant Applications the Right Way

For many South Australian clubs, funding and grant opportunities provide vital resources to upgrade facilities, purchase equipment, run programs, and strengthen community connections. However, a surprising number of applications fall short – not because clubs aren’t deserving, but because small errors or missing information lead to them being overlooked.

With so much work going into preparing an application, it’s essential that clubs give themselves the best chance of success.

Why Accuracy Matters

Funding bodies often receive hundreds of applications. A simple oversight – forgetting a required document, not answering every question, or submitting after the deadline – can mean your club’s application is dismissed before it’s even reviewed.

Tips for Successful Grant Applications

Read the Guidelines Carefully
Every funding body sets specific requirements. Make sure you understand what the grant covers, who is eligible, and what documents are needed.

Plan Ahead
Don’t leave your application until the last minute. Build in time to gather quotes, committee approvals, and supporting documents.

Answer Every Question
It sounds simple, but many applications are rejected because questions are left blank. If something doesn’t apply to your club, explain why – it shows you’ve thought it through.

Provide Evidence
Strengthen your application with clear evidence. This could include membership numbers, community impact statements, letters of support, or data showing why the project is needed.

Align with the Grant’s Objectives
Tailor your responses to match the funder’s goals. Show how your project benefits the community, promotes inclusion, or addresses the priorities outlined in the grant guidelines.

Check and Double Check
Before submitting, review the application against the checklist provided. Make sure all attachments are uploaded, your budget balances, and contact details are correct.

Keep a Copy
Always save a copy of your submission. This will make it easier to follow up with the funding body, reapply in future, or share with incoming committee members.

Don’t Waste the Effort
