NFP Self-Review Return
Lodgement of 2024/25 Financial Year Return
Last year changes came into effect that meant that not-for-profits (NFP’s) that have an active ABN and self-assess as being income tax exempt had to lodge an NFP self-review return with the ATO.
The due date for the first return, that being the return for the 2023/24 financial year, was due by 31 March 2025 after the ATO extended the lodgement date and support available in recognition that this was the first time this needed to be done.
Members are advised that the NFP self-review return for the 2024/25 financial year period is now open, and this must be lodged by 31 October 2025.
In addition to looking to ensure the return for the 2024/25 financial year period is done in the required timeframe, if any club has still not lodged their return for the 2023/24 financial year they must do so ASAP.
The ATO has suspended penalty applications for late lodgement of the 2023/24 NFP self-review return, however from July 2025 they have begun reviewing NFP’s that intentionally ignore their obligations.
It is important that members ensure these are lodged so they can remain income tax exempt and do not risk any issues arising with the ATO. Further information on the NFP self-review return can be found here and it can be lodged in one of the following ways:
– Using ATO’s online service for business
– Use the ATO’s self-help phone service (if online services can’t be used)
– Via a registered tax agent
Clubs with further questions should firstly look closely at the ATO’s website and can then look to speak to an accountant or tax agent if they need further assistance
