Keeping Culture, Community and Compassion Alive in Port Adelaide

For more than 67 years, the Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community of the Nativity of Christ has been bringing people together through faith, culture and an unwavering spirit of service.

What began as a gathering place for Greek families settling in Adelaide’s western suburbs has grown into a thriving, multi-generational community where church, school and volunteerism remain deeply connected. Today, hundreds of families continue to stay involved through worship, education, cultural activities and community events.

“We’ve always been a family-orientated community,” says Community President John Douvartzidis. “School, church and community all support each other. That’s been the key to keeping people connected.”

At the heart of that connection is the community’s Greek school. While enrolments once reached 300 students, between 150 and 200 children continue to attend each year. Alongside language education, the school, youth groups, dance programs and study tours to Greece help young people build meaningful connections to their heritage while remaining proudly Australian.

“The church has always been there,” says John. “Everything revolves around the church and has from day one.”

That sense of community extends well beyond the congregation.

Inspired by the Greek value of Philotimo – kindness, generosity and helping others without expecting anything in return – the volunteer-led Hearts in Action committee has become a powerful force for good across South Australia.

“We realised we could do more,” says Community Administrator Yvonne Noutsatos. “There’s so much need out there, and if we can help in some way, we want to.”

One of the group’s most successful initiatives has been My Mother’s Meal, a celebration of traditional Greek home cooking where community members prepare family recipes from regions across Greece. The events attract more than 150 guests and have raised close to $10,000 across two years, supporting organisations including Hutt St Centre, Women’s Safety Services and The Village Co.

The group’s support extends much further. Volunteers regularly partner with Puddle Jumpers to prepare meals for around 200 people at a time, provide backpacks, lunch boxes, school shoes and stationery to disadvantaged students, contribute gifts through the Backpacks for Kids program and assist families experiencing hardship throughout Adelaide.

A recent Winter Appeal generated more than $15,000 worth of food, clothing and essential items for organisations including CHATS Charity, Women’s Safety Services, Puddle Jumpers, Adelaide Day Centre and St Bede’s.

“Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference,” says Yvonne.

That same spirit shines through in the Semaphore Greek Festival, now approaching its 46th year and recognised as one of South Australia’s most loved cultural celebrations.

What started as a small fundraising event has grown into a three-day festival attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Behind the scenes, around 300 volunteers spanning four generations work together to bring the event to life.

“We’ve gone from being run by our fathers and mothers to now probably 85 per cent younger generations,” says John.

From preparing traditional recipes to welcoming visitors through the gates, the festival is a remarkable showcase of community pride. Long-serving volunteers still spend countless hours preparing ingredients by hand, ensuring the food remains authentic and true to the recipes passed down through generations.

“Everything we do there is cooked from scratch,” John says. “The volunteers are proud of what they do, and that pride doesn’t let us fail.”

The festival has become so popular that organisers often need to moderate promotion simply to ensure visitors can enjoy the experience safely and comfortably.

For John and Yvonne, however, the festival’s greatest success isn’t measured by attendance numbers. It’s the way it has inspired future generations to become involved.

“When I came in around 2010, we probably had 50 or 60 volunteers,” says John. “Today that’s grown to around 300.”

Many of those volunteers first became involved through the Greek school and community events as children, before stepping into leadership roles as adults.

“The young people see the older generations giving back and they want to be involved as well,” says Yvonne. “It becomes social, it becomes meaningful and they can see the difference they’re making.”

Looking ahead, plans are progressing for a new purpose-built facility that will provide a permanent home for the Greek school while creating new opportunities for community activities and long-term sustainability.

“It’s all about keeping the community together,” says John. “Church, school and community. That’s where it started, and that’s still where our future is.”

As a volunteer-led organisation operating in an increasingly complex regulatory environment, the community also values the support it receives from Clubs SA.

“Without a doubt, Clubs SA keeps us up to date with our legal responsibilities and obligations,” says John. “The newsletters, the bulletins, the advice, it all gives us confidence that we’re doing the right thing.”

“We see the value,” he adds. “You give us the framework to keep us aligned and compliant. Clubs like ours need that guidance.”

After 67 years, the Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community of the Nativity of Christ continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when people come together around a shared purpose. Through faith, culture, generosity and volunteer spirit, they have created a legacy that enriches the lives of generations of South Australians while ensuring their traditions, values and community spirit remain strong well into the future.
