Is AI Making Your Club Look Like Everyone Else?

AI has made it easier than ever to create marketing content.

Need a poster for Friday night entertainment? A social tile for an upcoming event? A graphic promoting a new menu, membership drive or community fundraiser? Within minutes, AI-powered design tools can generate something that looks polished and professional.

But there is a growing problem.

When everyone has access to the same tools, templates and design trends, everyone can start to look the same.

And for clubs that have spent years building recognition, trust and connection within their communities, that can slowly weaken the very thing marketing is supposed to strengthen: your brand.

The rise of the generic AI poster

You have probably seen the style.

Oversized typography. Dramatic gradients. Highly polished imagery. Generic smiling people. Neon lighting. Perfectly positioned food and drinks. Lots of visual effects.

Individually, there may be nothing technically wrong with the design.

The problem is that it could belong to almost anyone.

Remove the logo and ask yourself:

Would someone still recognise this as our club?

If the answer is no, the design may be promoting the event, but it isn’t necessarily building your brand.

Your brand is more than your logo

A strong brand isn’t simply a logo placed in the corner of a poster.

It is the consistent combination of your colours, fonts, photography, language, personality, values and visual style. Over time, those elements create familiarity.

For clubs, there is another important ingredient: your people and your place.

Your members, volunteers, staff, facilities, sporting teams, dining areas and community are assets that another organisation cannot replicate.

Replacing them with generic AI-generated people or environments may make a poster look polished, but it can also remove the authenticity that makes your club distinctive.

A slightly imperfect photograph from your actual club can sometimes be far more powerful than a flawless artificial image.

Consistency builds recognition

Think about some of the world’s most recognisable brands.

You often know who they are before you even see their logo because their visual identity is consistent.

Clubs can build the same recognition locally.

When members repeatedly see the same colours, typography, photographic style and tone of voice, those elements become associated with your club.

If every event poster suddenly adopts a completely different AI-generated aesthetic, that recognition becomes fragmented.

One week your club looks sophisticated and corporate. The next it looks like a nightclub. The following week it resembles a completely different hospitality venue.

Each individual design might look impressive, but collectively they may not look like you.

AI should support your brand, not create a new one every week

This doesn’t mean clubs should avoid AI.

Used well, AI can be an incredibly useful marketing assistant. It can help generate concepts, resize or adapt content, explore campaign ideas, draft copy and speed up repetitive creative work.

The key is to give AI boundaries.

Before creating promotional material, establish some basic brand rules:

  • Use approved brand colours and fonts.
  • Keep your logo placement consistent.
  • Develop several repeatable poster and social media layouts.
  • Prioritise genuine club photography wherever possible.
  • Define the style of imagery that suits your organisation.
  • Establish a consistent tone of voice.
  • Use AI-generated imagery selectively rather than automatically.
  • Review everything before publishing and ask whether it genuinely feels like your club.

AI works best when it operates inside an established brand system, rather than becoming the brand system itself.

Don’t confuse “professional” with “generic”

One of the traps of AI design is that it can produce something visually impressive very quickly.

But impressive isn’t necessarily effective.

Marketing needs to do more than look good. It needs to communicate who you are.

For a community club, authenticity can be an enormous competitive advantage. Your history, volunteers, members, facilities, local stories and community contribution are things no AI generator can manufacture.

Those are the things worth showing.

Before you publish, try the logo test

Next time you create a poster or social media graphic, cover up your logo.

Then ask:

Does this still feel like us?

Would a member recognise the colours, photography, language or design style?

Could this exact graphic just as easily belong to another club, pub, café or sporting organisation?

If it could, it may be time to bring more of your brand back into the design.

AI can make creating content faster.

Your brand is what makes that content yours.

And in a world where creating something “professional-looking” is becoming increasingly easy, being recognisable, authentic and consistent is becoming even more valuable.
