Marion Sports & Community Club

Marion Sports & Community Club has been part of Adelaide’s south for more than a century, but as General Manager Chad Gross describes it, the venue remains a bit of a hidden juggernaut. Established in 1908, the club has grown from a humble trotting track, oval and tin shed into a thriving community destination featuring a spacious function area, a 180 seat dining room, a traditional sports bar, and a 39-machine gaming room.

Today, the club is a genuine hub for connection. It’s home to View Club, Probus, Lions, Kiwanis and weekly cardplaying groups, with around 80 regulars attending Tuesday morning Canasta sessions alone. Chad says many visitors “find it an extremely safe place” to meet, socialise, and unwind – a testament to the club’s welcoming culture.

Sport is at the heart of the club’s identity. Marion proudly supports 19 football teams22 cricket teams17 soccer teams, plus gridiron, softball, korfball and more. Chad explains that their mission is “to cater for all ages and give a safe and happy environment for people to enjoy their social and sporting activities.” With such a diverse sporting footprint, the club’s grounds are constantly buzzing with activity.

Behind the scenes, the club is powered by around 40 staff, a dedicated management team, and an active committee. Sporting clubs contribute through their presidents, coaches, volunteers, and support crews – a network Chad describes as a group that “all work together and gel.”

The club is also entering an exciting period of growth. Fourteen new cricket nets – nine turf and four synthetic – are being installed, and a $6 million change room redevelopment is underway in partnership with City of Marion. The gaming room is set for a refresh, and a recent visit from the Premier secured funding for a brandnew electronic scoreboard. Chad says this upgrade has been “a want for quite a period of time,” and will open the door to new opportunities such as movie nights and sponsor advertising.

Events continue to be a major drawcard. The club hosts popular dinner shows for the 50–70 age group and is celebrating strong performances from its sporting teams, including league promotions for both soccer and football and finals appearances for cricket. A standout upcoming initiative is the TouchaTruck event with Department for Child Protection, expected to attract around 2,500 people during the April school holidays. Sporting clubs will run barbecues and canteens, creating a lively, family friendly atmosphere. The club also plans to introduce open days to welcome new visitors and showcase its sporting groups.

The club’s community continues to grow, with 15,500 members across financial and social categories calling Club Marion their home. With growth tracking at around 5% per month, the club is exploring incentives to encourage sporting players to become members as well. Chad has also implemented new business structures to strengthen financial sustainability, focusing on smarter purchasing and improved staffing management.

Running such a large and diverse club comes with challenges – from catering to different age groups to coordinating more than 35 sporting teams, but the club remains committed to providing a positive environment for both patrons and staff. As Chad puts it, “If you’re going out for tea or lunch somewhere, remember Club Marion.” Supporting the club by attending events, becoming a member, or cheering on its sporting teams helps ensure this long standing community institution continues to thrive.
