Country of Origin Labelling for Seafood

New requirements will come into effect on 1 July 2026 for any clubs that sell seafood or items that contain seafood that is available for immediate consumption (this means seafood that can be eaten as soon as the customer receives it).

Menus and signs will need to indicate the country of origin of seafood according to the “AIM” model, which involves indicating whether it is of Australian (‘A’), imported (‘I’) or mixed (‘M’) origin.

Clubs can meet the legislations requirements by having menus and signs labelled in one of the three following ways:

  1. Single letter AIM labels such as the below:
  • Grilled barramundi (A)
  • Steamed New Zealand mussels with garlic and white wine (I)
  • Pad thai noodles with prawns and squid (M)
  • Pad thai noodles with prawns (A) and squid (I)

*(A) Australian, (I) imported, (M) mixed

  1. Detailed AIM labels such as the below:
  • Grilled barramundi (Australian)
  • Steamed New Zealand mussels with garlic and white wine (contains imported seafood)
  • Pad thai noodles with prawns and squid (mixed origin)
  • Pad thai noodles with prawns (Australian) and squid (imported)
  1. A single statement for the whole business e.g. all our seafood is imported or we only serve Australian seafood (Please note however this method can’t be used where both Australian and imported seafood is served)

There are however a few exemptions that apply from needing to meet these requirements including:

  • Seafood served at a fundraising event.
  • Seafood served more than 24 hours after the customer orders it e.g. a special set menu that customers must book in advance.

In the case of the second exemption mentioned above, it is not relevant when the set menu is decided on but rather how far in advance, if at all, the customer books/agrees to the menu.
