Oakbank Golf Club
Nestled in the heart of the Onkaparinga Valley, you will find South Australia's second oldest golf Club: Oakbank Golf Club.
There has been a fantastic increase in membership numbers in recent years, from 135 in 2015 to today totalling 320, which includes an encouraging growth in juniors.
So how has the Club achieved this renewed lease of life? A great core of hard working, multi skilled volunteers have brought about this recent growth.
President Bruce was very proud to talk about the volunteers’ dedication and enthusiasm being a vital part of the Club’s success.
Bruce feels that having everyone on same page and working towards same goal is essential. They have plans to engage with local schools soon, again with an eye on the future. A local college covers turf management in one of its courses and Club has built an association with the college to promote this.
There is a core of 10-12 volunteers with many more willing helpers whenever there’s a call out to assist with specific projectsA team of 3 tend to the mowing - Dick, Ken & Ashley, with 3 holes each and mowing 3-4 days including fairways before 6am on Thursdays! Bruce gave a shout out to Jamie, Alistair, David, John, Johan, Cooper and weed sprayers Bruce and Dick too.
Jeff does the bar for four days including stock purchasing and stocking and there are 20 RSA trained volunteers available to work behind the bar.
Food wise, the ladies hold a monthly soup and scones get together and Mondays and Wednesdays see the gentlemen settle in for beers and pies after their rounds
It is clear to see the huge impact volunteers have had and continue to have at Oakbank Golf Club and they are an excellent example of how important a group of willing hands are to our South Aussie Clubs. Well done to all involved!
